We are off to SOFA Chicago. Will post pics soon. Unfortunately our shop will temporarily be closed until the 8 th of November. Can't wait to see all the world class fine craft.

Lark books, Burlington Art Centre, SOFA Chicago...

Lots has happened since our last entry!
1.) Lark books published 500 teapots volume II at the end of the summer. King's Point Pottery is one of the 500 artists. This is our second lark book we were selected for. The first was Plates and Chargers. Thank you to Lark for including us again. We do have both lark books available for purchase at our gallery.

2.) The Burlington Arts Centre, in Ontario currently has a show on until the middle of January 2014 called " Salt Soda and Wood". We are a part of that group show. Thank you to Jonathan Smith for including us in our very first Burlington event. Thank you as well to Gloria Hickey who introduced us to the people at Burlington.

3.) The world famous, SOFA Chicago, USA is on starting November 01, 2013. We applied and were invited on an educational mission to this world's biggest one of a kind (gallery craft) exhibition. There, you could buy for the same price, either a house or a piece of craft...amazing! We are very excited for our first trip to Sofa and Chicago.

(Unfortunately it is on at the very same time as the CCNL  xmas craft fair at the arts and culture centre in St John's, NL...so we are missing that wonderful show for the first time in 21 years! But we hope you don't miss the finest craft fair in St John's! 6th to the 10th of November 2013)

There is a whole lot more happening but a bit too early to blog about just yet. We will keep you posted!

 David will be giving a lecture on day one, "Recreating the future; Product Development", at a world class Creative Conference in Sydney, NS Canada! Speakers are coming from all across North America. Check out this incredible event!!!

Cape Breton Centre for Craft & Design will be hosting an exciting conference March 25th, 26th and 27th of 2013. The first day of the conference will be a day for artisans in the region to discover trends in the craft sector and enhance their professional skills in a variety of areas related to running a successful business in this dynamic sector. The 2nd and 3rd days will host sessions focusing on the importance of the creative economy in our community and look at how the development of cultural policies within municipalities can work to strengthen the craft sector in Cape Breton.

Selected for inclusion in a new lark book!

King's Point Pottery has just been notified that they have been selected as one of the 500 international works to be included in latest version of "500 teapots V2" by Lark Publications based in Asheville, North Carolina, USA. (The very first in the wildly popular 500 series was coincidentally "500 teapots V1" way back in 2002.) This is the second time we have been published with Lark. Our first was in their 500 plates and chargers book in 2008. Sorry but I am not going to include an image of the specific work, as I wish it to be a  little bit of a surprise when it comes out later this year. Thank you very much to lark and their expert jury for the honour...and of course our many customers for supporting our work.

The annual Feast of Pottery is about to start! Ceramic craft/artists from various parts of North America have been invited by  St John's curator Alexis Templeton. We have been invited and can't wait to see this once a year opportunity, to check out exceptional new work from an ever changing selection of ceramicist! It's a wonderful show and sale. If you are in the area be sure to take it in!

King's Point Pottery Fine Craft Gallery was recently profiled by Arts Quest or http://www.artsquest.ca/
I call them the new Canadian "Etsy"....that is to say they are developing a new online full service sales site for fine craft and fine art types from Canada only.

Prior to putting the finishing touches on their e-commerce site they are laying the real honest ground work by travelling right across the country visiting crafts persons, arts persons and...discovering them, interviewing them and learning about them in general.

Fusion article on jonathons.ca

Jonathon Bancroft-Snell Gallery is featured in an article from the very latest issue of Ontario's (Canada) Fusion Magazine (Vol. 36, No. 2). The writer Judy Donaldson discusses the fantastic national ceramics show from the summer called "Matter of Clay III" by the JBS Gallery. Having been lucky enough to attend the opening in person (as did 49 other artists of the 102 showing work from across Canada) I can tell you it was all time Canadian highlight in my 20 years in the business! Jonathon has invited King's Point Pottery  to send work to yet another national show this summer at the JBS Gallery. The title has gone out of my head...mmm...have to call Jonathon on that one! Oh...Linda just reminded me , it is "Yesterday and Today" from August 09 to September 01, 2012 at the Jonathon Bancroft-Snell Gallery in London, Ontario, Canada. Hope anyone in the London Ontario area this summer will be able to stop by and check it out!

Iced-bergy bowl from Seattle Soda firing.

 Gail Nichols , the famous innovator from Australia was our wonderful soda firing workshop leader. The objective was to get soda ice built up on the work. Some how it is fitting (and a bit strange at the same time,) that someone living in Newfoundland would in the 100th anniversary year of the sinking of the Titanic (just off our coast) be making iceberg bowls (carved from solid lumps of white clay) and want them glazed with soda ice crystals by a potter from down under. Well as you can see...it definitely worked. The clay for this piece is a white (raku) sculpture clay cone 10 with 25% 30-80 mesh grog by Tuckers Pottery Supply from Ontario, Canada. The workshop was held during NCECA 2012 at the amazing facility called Pottery Northwest in Seattle, Washington, USA.

Off on a LARK....books that is...er, hopefully...

I was right there, in Asheville NC, USA, a few years back, the home of Lark Books who are known around the world for their 500 series on craft books. While it was not a big memorable space, was a place I'll never forget in terms of craft literature! Anyways... they just had a call for submissions for a new "500 teapots" that just closed. Unfortunately, we won't know for months if none, one.. or any of our four submissions will be included in their newest book. But having been in their 2008 book "500 plates and chargers"...we have our fingers and toes crossed for continued success in this next 500 series!

(Oh and the yellow teapot shown above...not ours..but I'd hit "like" for sure!)

NLAC Grant Final Report going in...

We likely do not mention this organization as much as we really should. The Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council  gave us a major grant back on 15 May 2011 to hire a world class writer, curator...a.k.a.Gloria Hickey to assist in getting our first Saidye Bronfman Award Nomination package together and a million other things surrounding that huge effort overseen by the nominating group, The Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador. The NLAC covers grants and awards for everything from dance, film, multidiscipline, music, theatre, visual art, to writing. We wish to say a really wonderful grand thank you to the NLAC (and the province of NL who strongly support the NLAC's efforts) for all their valuable hard work....and to say the final report will be in the mail tomorrow!

Sorry...I realized after I posted the last group image...you don't really get a good feel for the fine craftspersonship from the previous candid shot. So although this is yet another amateur image by me...I hope it better portrays the timeless beauty of their work. (But I have added it to my to do list of a pro shot for the stone vases.)

Back from NCECA Seattle, USA

You're unbelievable...It's pure GOLD for a ceramic artist building up their business. Imagine 5,000 +delegates, 190+ ceramic exhibitions, 173 resource booths,..well over 5,000 images taken.

The top 5...

1.) We have now identified 6 USA exhibitions we will be applying to this year.

2.) Learned a innovative approach to firing... hands on at Pottery Northwest...as one of just 12 students... from the world's most famous soda artist, Gail Nichols of Australia.

(Thanks to go out to Fedex and their other shippers for getting our pots for the soda firing, to the workshop on time, right across the continent (town by town by town as shown in the previous post) , across the border and yes all in one piece!...we are now patiently awaiting the pots to return from Seattle to King's Point Pottery by...Fedex and friends!)

3.) Learned first hand in a small preconference workshop, a new way of making tea pots from one of our most favourite British potter's, Walter Keeler.

4.) Learned about a brand new (space age) ceramic canvas material from Canada's first Bronfman Award Winner, Robin Hopper.

5.) Made a lot of new friends and caught up with old friends...learning all we could about the international world of ceramics and telling them about NL.

To say we are very fortunate does not come even close to the mark. We are hugely grateful to our Craft Industry Development Program, CIDP run by the provincial craft division of IBRD, ACOA and the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador, CCNL; our family; our friends; colleagues and customers. They all in varying degrees make it possible for us to continue to put our best foot forward here at King's Point Pottery.

It is this years site for the biggest international clay conference in North America, the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts, the NCECA Conference. We will be doing a firing with the world's most famous soda firer, Gail Nichols of Australia and taking a workshop with one of the finest salt fire potters anywhere, Walter Keeler of London England.... And see thousands of amazing pots from all around the world. I can't wait show you the work that will we make this summer as a result of all this glorious inspiration. It's March Madness for potters!!

Petermann icebergs Baie Verte!!

The Petermann ice island "B" in off Seal Cove on the Baie Verte Penninsula in Central Newfoundland, Canada. It is just unbelievable! Special thanks to Carl Osbourne of Seal Cove for arranging the boat tour.

Next door in beautiful Wild Cove harbour is a sizable chunk of the ice island with many iceberg dotting the local waters. Don't delay...go today!!!
